Bishop Moses New Bishop of Chittagong

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Moses Costa CSC of Dinajpur as the new Bishop of Chittagong on April 6, 2011. It was announced in Vatican and from the Bishop Houses in Bangladesh. He is filling up the position of Bishop Patrick D’Rozario CSC, who had been appointed the Coadjutor Archbishop of Dhaka on November 25, 2010. Bishop Moses Costa CSC served Dinajpur diocese for 15 years which is in the north-east of Bangladesh, with a Catholic population of about 42,000 among aboriginal communities of Shantals, Oraons, Mahalis, Mundaris, Malos and Mal Paharis besides the Bengali community.

 

His newly-designated Diocese of Chittagong in the south-east of Bangladesh has a Catholic population of about 33,000 among Bengalis and aboriginal communities of Marmas, Tripuras and Bawms.

Bishop Moses Costa CSC was born in Toomilia on November 17, 1950, was ordained priest on February 5, 1981 and consecrated Bishop of Dinajpur on September 6, 1996. His installation was held in Chittagong. A hearty welcome was given to  Bishop Moses Costa CSC upon his arrival on May 26 afternoon at the Cathedral Parish, Chittagong with guard of honor, washing of feet and a prayer service.

 

Installation ceremony was held at the St. Placid’s High School premise on May 27. All the Bishops of Bangladesh (except Bishop Gervas who was out of the country for a seminar) and Most. Rev. Joseph Marino, Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh, priests, religious and a good number of faithful were present. In the beginning of the Eucharist, 14 candles were lit representing 14 parishes of the diocese. Bishop Moses Costa CSC presided over the Eucharistic Celebration and gave the homily. In his homily he referred the readings of the day where Solomon asked for loving heart and wisdom to lead his people. On the other hand, Peter acknowledged his fidelity and love to Jesus and took the greater responsibility. On this auspicious occasion Bishop Moses Costa asked for that kind of loving heart and wisdom that Solomon asked for and fidelity and love to Jesus like Peter to lead His people of Chittagong. Bishop Moses Costa also mentioned about the prospect of evangelization in the hill districts, active participation of laity in the Church, inter religious dialogue and solidarity in the diocese, presence of the English speaking community which he considers as strength and inspiration of his ministry in the diocese.

 

 

A civic reception was given to Bishop Moses Costa in the afternoon. Monjural Alam, Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation was also present. The Mayor congratulated the newly installed Bishop on behalf of the City Corporation and assured him all possible cooperation in discharging his Epicopal ministry for more than three core people (including the non Christian) in Chittagong.
